  • I do wish some of it was more tightly plotted, and paced better, the narrative is so interesting tho, the way the different families and people in them connect to each other in different ways, and the past histories, and the way the movie shows the passage of time, and how you never forget your first love, plus there’s some great irony in literally every scene.

You can really see how this went on to inspire a lot of later 90s and 2000s bollywood movies like Kabhi Khushi kabhi gham, but I feel there are many scenes and parts that don’t really move the story forward, the last 30 mins are fantastic though, and it’s definitely worth it to finally…

  • this movie is wilddddd. but yash chopra understands color like no one else

  • Kabhi Kabhie is one of my favourite love stories in Hindi cinema. And my favourite character in this epic multi-starrer is Vijay Khanna, a flamboyant, wonderfully generous man played by Shashi Kapoor. In one of the film's best moments, Khanna finally understands that his host — Amit, played by Amitabh Bachchan — was not just in college with his wife, Pooja, but also in love with her. Vijay confronts Amit but his only grievance is that Amit didn't tell him. After all, Vijay says, Pooja is so beautiful that any man would fall in love with her.

In Kabhi Kabhie, Yash Chopra, created a love story that spanned generations. The climax, which includes explosions and a headstrong runaway, is downright…

  • the more i watch this movie the movie i fall in love with it and its heartbreaking and uplifting narrative.

  • There are some amazing moments and the fashion is iconic, but this needed so much more Rakhee and Waheeda and so much less misogyny...

  • This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

    Love is Life...

Damn, I should’ve watched this sooner! The film is rich in unapologetically cheesy pickup lines which I could’ve used during my college days. Yash Chopra’s Kabhi Kabhie is the mother of all Indian soap operas. Romance, breakup, arranged (reluctant) marriages, dysfunctional couples, illegitimate daughter, love triangles, male ego, etc. Kabhi Kabhie has it all.

    P. S. I half-expected Vijay (Shashi Kapoor) to turn out to be the biological father of Pinky (Neetu Singh). But thankfully, that’s not the case. Otherwise, it would’ve been one big clusterf..k.

    P. P. S.Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein” is playing in the background.

  • Let's start with the clear protagonist of this film: The clothes. There are several memorable outfits though the winner is obviously Pinky's unforgettable red and white tie-dye blouse and wide trousers. It is amazing! Vicky, Vijay and Amit also have several fabulous ones. I particularly loved Amit's all white suit which reminded me of Sholay.

Spanning two generations we see how children bear the brunt of unsolved issues from their parent's generations. This is true both for the dynamic between the two generations we follow directly but clearly also from the one before. The past and how we deal with it is foregrounded in a myriad of ways, some more succesful than others. I think generally it is worth noting…

  • Oh the vibes and aesthetic of this film is just immaculate, especially in the first thirty minutes. So many details to adore, from just the cinematography to the costume and set design to some really impactful cut scenes implemented throughout. I just love the way Chopra can weave together the lives of different people as they cross each other’s paths and I don’t even know how to describe it but that scene where Amit and Pooja talk in that one moment, so good. I can only gauge from the translation but the poetry of this film and the dialogue are also beautiful. I can’t help to think this film would’ve been a great double feature with some Sirkian melodrama. Yash Chopra is such a great director!!!!

  • Extra half star for Shashi Kapoor and the wonderful character he plays 🥺 Good on Pooja for not marrying Amitabh, seems like a terrible husband

  • yrf @50

  • Slow film. Lovely story. I wish this was done with a tighter script, and it could have been a much better film. Beautiful songs fill in for a bit, but sometimes they're not enough, and at least a couple of times, even the songs become a drag.

  • Hard not to be immediately taken in by the colors and production design in this film. Story-wise this aims for big melodramatic movements, its not playing on the smaller level of the details of daily life, but pushing its characters around into situations where big life-long feelings pour out. These aren't the kinds of characters you find every day, but its a wonderful exploration of big cinematic emotional storytelling and isn't afraid to punctuate each moment with heavy style. If you're able to enter in this kind of filmmaking it can be quite a powerful experience.

Kabhi Kabhie (Hindi: कभी कभी, English: Sometimes) is a 1976 Indian Hindiromantic drama film, produced and directed by Yash Chopra, starring an ensemble cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Raakhee, Shashi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh and Simi Garewal. This was Yash Chopra's second directorial film with Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor in the lead roles after Deewaar and was particularly noted for its soundtrack compositions by Khayyam, who won Filmfare Award for Best Music, while film lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi won the Best Lyricist Award for 'Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein,' the song which also got singer Mukesh the Best Male Playback Singer award.[2]

Story[edit]

Amit Malhotra (Amitabh Bachchan) recites one of his poems at a college/university where he meets fellow student Pooja (Raakhee), and they fall in love. But Pooja's parents arrange for her to marry an architect, Vijay Khanna (Shashi Kapoor). A heartbroken Amit returns home and joins his father's business – a construction company – and later marries Anjali (Waheeda Rehman), who secretly has a daughter named Pinky (Neetu Singh) from a pre-marital relationship. Amit and Anjali have a daughter, Sweetie. In the meantime, Pinky is adopted by childless couple Dr. and Mrs. R.P. Kapoor.

Spanning over to the next generation, Pooja and Vijay have a son, Vikram (Rishi Kapoor), also known as 'Vicky', who falls in love with Pinky while they are at a party, and the two plan to get married. When Pinky learns of her adoption and the identity of her real mother, she tries to get close to Anjali. While Anjali eventually acknowledges her existence and secretly showers her love on her reunited daughter, she does not reveal the relationship to her husband, fearing for her marriage. The situation is further complicated by Vicky's attempts to stay close to Pinky and Sweetie's romantic interest in Vicky.

This sets in motion a chain of events that unites old flames as friends.

Production[edit]

The film's concept came to Yash Chopra while he was reading a poem by his longtime friend (and also the film's lyricist) Sahir Ludhianvi. The movie was shot in Kashmir, and Yash Chopra has claimed this to be one of his happiest experiences and he described the production as a 'honeymoon', since the entire cast worked together as a family.[6] The film also led to the reinvention of Amitabh Bachchan as a romantic poet who loses his love, which was a major departure from his earlier 'angry young man' roles such as Deewaar and Zanjeer. The film had been written with Raakhee in mind, and she had agreed to do it during the making of Daag (1973)[7] but before production started she married lyricist Gulzar, who wanted her to retire from acting. However, after some persuasion from Yash Chopra, Gulzar let her do the film.
